Basic Bike Maintenance

Checking Your Bike Before a Ride

The video below is a great guide to how to give you bike a quick pre-ride check over. Although the video is 12 minutes long, once you're familiar with the contents you can easily check you bike in just a couple of minutes.

Working on your bike

For many people one working on their bike is every much as part of the cycling experience as riding it!  One of the joys of cycling is that with the right tools and a workstand you can do most bike maintenance and part changes yourself.

With a little help from our friends

If, however, you'd like a bit of help getting up to speed on bike maintenance, and the reassurance of having a qualified cycle mechanic nearby in case you come across something you're not sure of, then the Broken Spoke Bike Co-op is the place to go.  They have all the tools you need and experts on-hand who are happy to help. They are super-friendly and you don't need any previous mechanics experience to go along. Best of all, as a Condor you get the concessionary rate for their drop-in DIY workshop sessions and 15% off their excellent mechanics courses.

Broken Spoke also run a monthly mechanics evening for women and trans people called Beryl's Night which is a great place to learn new skills in a supportive environment.

Outsourcing...

If you'd prefer to let someone else do the oily work then all of the good bike-shops in town have well-equipped workshops.  Your fellow Condors can be a great source of knowledge too!
